New politicians needed

THE EDITOR: Elections are around the corner in TT and could be called at any time. Unfortunately, most of the same old faces are going to be seeking to win their seats in their particular constituencies. Election mode is on and what we have now in this country are career politicians who think they are the only ones capable of doing the job and a gullible public that believes them and puts their confidence in them. The voting public is failing to realise that these politicians are driven by a thirst for power and their main focus is gaining power and remaining in office for as long as possible.

The job of representing their constituents becomes secondary to their job of remaining in power and exploiting the position for financial gain. Decisions are made based on how it affects their chance at retaining power as opposed to what’s best for the people who elected them.

Politicians should not serve more than eight years in office. This is enough for any politician and in some cases, less is even better.

Politicians are best at giving the voters a good number of promises they will not fulfil. Mark Twain once said that politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason. It's time for a complete overhaul of the entire political system and process. Too much in this country has been going wrong for too long. We need a new political party with new politicians and no deep pocket financiers.
