LABELLED as more than a constituency office but a service centre, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar took off the proverbial gloves and declared war against the PNM for the marginal seat of Tunapuna.

In her opening speech, the former prime minister held no punches lashing out at the incumbent MP for Tunapuna Esmond Forde, who is currently out of the country on parliamentary duties. Persad-Bissessar said while Forde was claiming to have an open door policy, he was out of the country and with the UNC’s office there will not only be an open door but someone there to assist. The two-storey building off the Eastern Main Road, Tunapuna will offer more than just party information, she said, but will be a haven for all “who wants to see TT working again.”

“Why we opening this office? It is part of our vision one corridor movement. To serve and service the people. These doors will be open and there will be people here to hear you and help you. Our job is to get TT safer” she said.

The Siparia MP was direct in her message that the opening of the office was aimed at getting votes and usher the United National Congress (UNC), back into office. She added that the office should be considered a welcoming home where there will be free legal and medical clinics; a job placement centre where the unemployed and employers can meet; free advice and guidance on accessing public grants as well as entrepreneurial advice. She added that there will also be healthy lifestyle advice, before taking time to express her disappointment with former health minister Dr Fuad Khan who was highly criticised for calling a masquerader a “tub”. He later apologised for the comment and offered to meet with and help the woman lose weight, but she refused his offer and accepted his apology.
