Mitchila Williams of Signal Hill Secondary was crowned the new Tobago Junior Calypso Monarch on Tuesday. Williams, singing "Who are you", edged 2018 champion Naomi Waldrop by two points in a stiff competition at the Signal Hill Secondary school. Waldrop had the crowd lapping up her performance with "Where were you" but had to settle for second place.

Clad in red, white and black, Williams' presentation depicted calypso idols and the importance of remembering to uphold the high standard set by the art form's predecessors. She also reminded the audience to cherish veteran calypsonians and reward them for their contributions to the calypso arena while they are alive. The song was written by Sherwin Cunningham

The form four student told Newsday Tobago the win came as a surprise to her and she feels thankful for the opportunity.

Williams, who began singing calypso at eight years said, “I feel elated and quite shocked. The inspiration was to focus on the cultural background of Trinidad and Tobago and I felt great; I was able to successfully do this.”

She encouraged young calypsonians not to give up, trust God and give their best effort at what they choose to do.

Nkosi Millar placed 3rd with his rendition of "Never Give up."
