Ideal time to stop floods

THE EDITOR: TT is going through the dry season. It is the ideal time for doing works that would mitigate flooding when the rains return. What works is the Government carrying out presently? There may be four weeks left before the rain comes; or 14.

Some areas are prone to extreme flooding, eg South Quay in Port of Spain, or the Greenvale and low-lying Caroni areas. Some parts get light flooding but it happens easily, eg St Lucien Road, Diego Martin. They all require their own types of drainage maintenance.

In addition, taken together, they would yield and “pay forward” the large-scale plan for overall drainage engineering and improvements.

Thousands of people are now being severely affected almost every year by flooding. They are hit with all kinds of loss, as in financially and in terms of their possessions and time; and many suffer it repeatedly.

Judging from the news so far there are no fatalities. One day serious medical emergencies and/or disease epidemic will occur.

Is this PNM Government which undermined the former PNM leader Patrick Manning and capitulated to the People’s Partnership, now going to tell us, “There was no money for upkeeps?” What should we be telling it at that point in the game, that “we are not the experts but can detail how it could all have gotten done?”
