TT drop Bahamas 2-1 in Jr Fed Cup opener

TT won one singles and one doubles match to trump Bahamas 2-1 in both team's first test at the 2019 Junior Fed Cup North/Central America & Caribbean pre-qualifiers in El Salvador, yesterday.

The result saw TT end the day in second place behind Curacao, who defeated Panama 3-0 in their first match-up. The TT team of Aalisha Alexis, Isabel Abraham and Keesa Lee Young will play the Panama trio today (9 am local time), the second day of the six-day programme.

Alexis was involved in the two wins, securing her first in a singles clash against Gabrielle Simms 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

The second singles match took some two and a half hours before Bahamas' Peyton Anderson edged TT's Isabel Abraham 6-7(2), 6-4, 4-6 – a result which made for an exciting finale for both teams.

In the end, Alexis combined with Lee Young and defeated Anderson and team-mate Perjae Major 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 in another tough duel.

In other results yesterday, host nation El Salvador trounced their visiting neighbours Nicaragua 3-0 in the three-team Group A, while Guatemala and the Dominican Republic secured easy 3-0 wins over Jamaica and Honduras respectively in Group B.

The Group C winners were Barbados (2-1 over Costa Rica) and Puerto Rico (3-0 over Cuba).

TT, who had not featured in the Fed Cup pre-qualifiers for six years prior, will play Curacao on Wednesday, a match which will likely determine which teams progress to the first to eight-place play-off.
