Torpedoes' 1st long course invitational this weekend

TORPEDOES Swim Team (TST) will host its first annual long course invitational competition this weekend at the National Aquatic Centre, Balmain, Couva.

President of Torpedoes Ronald Corke said the two-day competition aims to promote, inspire and attract young people to the sport by providing an opportunity for them to test their skills. The long-course event will also provide an opportunity for national swimmers to qualify for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Swimming Federation and Carifta Championships.

The two-day event will feature Amateur Swimming Association of TT-registered teams and swimmers competing in various events in all strokes in age-group categories: eight and under; nine to ten; 11-12; 13-14; and 15 and over. The top three swimmers in each race will receive medals and the top three male and female swimmers in each age group will receive a trophy.

Torpedoes has been in existence for over 20 years and swims out of the La Joya Complex in St Joseph. Its head coach is former national Olympian Sharntelle Mc Lean.

According to Corke, the team is dedicated to the promotion and development of competitive swimming as well as professional and competitive future elite athlete development.

He said, “Our goal is to develop one of the most comprehensive and competitive swim programmes in the country, with opportunities for every young swimmer to reach his or her full potential. It is our mission to foster a team environment and a culture that is fun and enjoyable, with skill development being of utmost importance.”

Torpedoes will host its seventh annual inter-club short course development competition on April 20 and 21, also at at the National Aquatic Centre.
