Jail for guard who stole $900

AFTER locking himself in the toilet of a restaurant and bar in Penal where he worked, a 47-year-old security guard waited until the owner left, then stole $900 from a cash register and walked out.

Yesterday he pleaded guilty before Siparia magistrate Margaret Alert, who sentenced him to 30 months in jail with hard labour. She also scolded him, saying he was in a position of trust.

Police said the proprietor of the View at Penal Rock Road, Penal, locked the bar on Saturday night, not knowing the guard was still inside, and found the money missing on Sunday.

Penal CID investigated and arrested the guard at his home on Monday.

Yesterday he admitted in court that he stole the money, which he said he spent. He also said he fell asleep in the toilet.

PC Morean laid the charge.

Only a few months ago, the guard had appeared before Alert on a similar charge. She found him guilty and fined him.
