Amazing hypocrisy

THE EDITOR: The unmitigated gall of the US government never ceases to amaze.

The relatively new US Ambassador to TT, Mr Joseph Mondello, issued a press release, about Venezuela, in which he said, "I find the official statements from the government of TT recognising the undemocratic and illegitimate government of Nicholas Maduro to be deeply concerning. Democracy and prosperity require tough choices."

This man represents a country that has, over many years, illegitimately overthrown many democratically elected governments, in our hemisphere and globally. He has the nerve to come and tell us about democracy!

The hypocrisy is astounding.

If you are so concerned, Mr Ambassador, maybe, you can tell us why the US government is "palsy-walsy" with a Venezuelan-owned, Houston-based oil refiner called CITGO Petroleum Corporation. This company is the crown jewel of the Venezuelan state-owned oil and natural gas company, PDVSA.

Worse than all of this, however, is the move by the UNC opposition leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, to recognise the opposition leader of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, as its legitimate head of state. He was quickly endorsed by US President Donald Trump as the rightful leader of Venezuela.

One wonders whether she hopes the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) will help her foment internal disturbances in TT, to the detriment of our elected government, so that she can also name herself as Prime Minister and be immediately recognised by the Trump Administration.

According to Dr Montano: "HA HA HA! Real Comedy." But, maybe not.

I had warned the country, a few months ago, that the new US ambassador was coming with a clear US imperialist agenda for TT. As it was written, so it is happening.

Citizens of TT, buckle up. It is going to be a very rough ride.
