Playboys going for hat-trick

REIGNING, two-time Single Pan champions Newtown Playboys will start the defence of their title on January 29 as the last steel orchestra in the Northern Region.

By the time the judges reach at Newtown Playboys base they would have heard 20 previous bands and the pannists from Tragarete Road intend to go all out to repeat and make it a hat-trick.

Manager Vincent Benjamin said: “Amidst rumours that we are not entering Panorama this year, the players were adamant that we come out and defend. We would like to get the three-peat. Playboys not staying home we coming with Tambu’s 1990 Road March No No We eh Going Home.”

The song was arranged by two members of the band, Aaron Pereira and Richye Joseph, with assistance from Tony "Pan Jumbie" Williams from Tobago.

“We are coming with the full complement of players and are in high gear as rehearsals are ongoing,” Benjamin said.

Band director Keron Valentine said Tuesday will be special, “We will host our corporate cocktail event from 8 pm at the Tragarete Road Pan Theatre and Lounge before the adjudication panel arrives.

“The performance will be special and we are asking all our supporters to come out and enjoy and evening of sweet pan music.”

Valentine relinquished his position as manager and chairman of the band last October before the Pan Trinbago elections.
