Jamaican jailed for false DP

A JAMAICAN was jailed yesterday for having a forged driver’s permit.

Magistrate Alicia Chankar, in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court, sentenced Oshaine George, 25, of Edinburgh 500, near Chaguanas, to one year in jail. Another Jamaican Omari Lindsay, 22, of Derrick Road, Chase Village, was fined $2,400 for driving without a permit and insurance.

They were arrested during a police exercise on Tuesday on the south-bound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway under the Gasparillo overpass.

George pleaded guilty before Chankar who heard from prosecutor PC Cleyon Seedan, that at about 11.45 am, WPC Grant confronted him when he got out of an AD wagon. The car had mounted the pavement, and police went to investigate.

Seedan said that George handed Grant a permit but it appeared to be forged. He also said that there is an order of detention from immigration against George.

Chankar questioned George about how he obtained the permit. He said he gave someone $1,500 and a photo of himself with a red background in 2016.

Chankar said that the crime is very serious, given the numerous accidents on the nation’s roads.

There is no compensation, she added, if someone is injured as a result. She ordered George to serve the jail term with hard labour.

Lindsay appeared before magistrate Anslem Leander in the traffic court.

The magistrate fined him $400 for not having a permit and $2,000 for driving while not having the car insured. There is an order of detention, police prosecutor Sgt Ishmael said, for Lindsay as well.
