THE Moruga Road at Indian Walk has been reopened, and upgrade works continued yesterday as part of the Moruga Road Rehabilitation project.

On Tuesday night, part of the road collapsed owing to leaks from underground pipelines from the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA). The road became impassable causing drivers and commuters to use alternative routes.

Workers from WASA, in collaboration with workers from the Works and Transport Ministry, started repair work on Wednesday morning and it ended on Saturday.

“The road opened at about 3 pm on Saturday. It is single lane and work continues. We are opened today but sales are slow,” said 38-year-old Petal Dookie who operates Jaibo’s Recreation Club.

Residents complained that recurring leaks over the past few years from WASA’s underground infrastructure is the main reason for the rapid land movement.

Last month, four residents, including a grandmother and her one-month-old granddaughter, moved out of their badly damaged two-storey house as it was deemed unfit to live in. They are now renting and are hoping that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) allocate them a house as soon as possible.

One of the occupants, Arliss Young-Ellis, 30, said: “I am still waiting to get a call from the HDC.

We must pay our rent for another month. My mother is having breathing problems. She is stressed over his.”

In October 2017, the ministry launched the rehabilitation project which extends from Petit Café, on the outskirts of Princes Town in the north, to Marac Village in the south.

The three main contractors are Carib Asphalt Pavers Limited, General Earth Movers Limited and Lutchmeesingh’s Transport Company Ltd.
