A passenger who allegedly held a knife to the neck of a 74-year-old taxi driver during a robbery on Wednesday is expected to face a San Fernando magistrate this afternoon.

PC Quizel Mahabir of the Marabella Police Station charged the 27-year-old suspect today with robbery with aggravation. He is a labourer and lives at Gowers Well Road, Fyzabad.

Police said at 11 am on Wednesday a passenger got into the taxi near Royal Castle, San Fernando, and asked to be taken to Marabella. On reaching Hubert Rance Street, Vistabella, he pulled out a knife, held it to the driver’s neck and robbed the driver, who lives at Whiteland, his cellphone and car keys.

Police said the man told the driver to get out of the car, but the latter screamed for help and people nearby held the thief and later handed him over to police from the Emergency Response Patrol.
