Friends transporting loaded gun jailed

TWO friends who decided to take up an offer to transport a loaded gun for $800 to the home of another man in La Romaine, felt the brunt of the law yesterday when they were each sentenced to a year in prison by a San Fernando magistrate. In passing sentence, magistrate Alicia Chankar told Anildath Cazabo, 47, and Lorenzo Charlie, 33, that the court would not condone this.

“What on earth would posses you all to do that?” she asked the men.

The magistrate said when looking at the nature of the crimes that are committed, 75 per cent of cases in which guns were used resulted in death.

Cazabo and Charlie pleaded guilty to possession of a gun and two rounds of ammunition. The court heard the two did not have firearms user’s licences.

Prosecutor PC Cleyon Seedan said the men were arrested in a car at Ethel Street, La Romaine at about 11.20 am.

When police searched the car they found the loaded gun between the driver’s seat and front passenger seat. The gun was presented in court.

Attorney Frank Gittens, who represented the men, said his clients were offered the job of transporting the gun to a house when they were arrested. He said they were struggling financially and decided to take up the offer, a decision they regret, and they were remorseful.
