Inspirational book of poems from Dr Chen

THE EDITOR: Dr Wilfred Chen has put down his surgical knife and taken up his pen to write his first anthology of poems.

We remember Keats for his beautiful odes on art, Wordsworth for his lyrical ballads and charms of the lake district, Masefield for his descriptions on the moods of the sea, and Gibran for his poems on love and the beauty of life.

However, Chen graciously writes on the pursuits of peace and happiness in relation to God.

The anthology is named God speaks in Silence and sub-titled Poems for all Seasons. The book contains over 90 poems of simple verses, bereft of figurative language and classical allusions but direct to the heart and soul, filling the arteries with beauty, truth and the enrichment of life. It is inspirational, indeed. It keeps you focused on the greatness and power of God.

Some thoughtful passages in the poems are: “How many have left we don’t know, we have to listen to an inner voice;” “We thank the Lord, the joy of the world, who made all things beautiful;” “We are the branches, Christ the vine;” and “We must not be buried in our riches but must love the world with passion.”

Writing the foreword, Reynold Bassant, a retired librarian, states: “The poems are unpretentious creations that are deceptively simple yet accessible to people from all walks of life.”

Frank Birbalsingh, professor emeritus, York University, Canada, states: “The most striking aspect of this collection of poems is a deep sense of conviction in the goodness of God, who created and now administers the world with merciful and loving care.”

Chen is a research cancer/development scientist and has presented papers at several international scientific conferences. This book is dedicated to his parents who came all the way from Tientsin, Kwong Tung Province, China and settled in Trinidad.

Congratulations to Dr Chen for this thought-provoking and vastly inspirational anthology. We are now waiting eagerly for his next book.
