Civics lessons already taught in TT schools

THE EDITOR: I have seen reports in the press in which some commentators are saying the school curriculum does not equip our students with the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to become good citizens. Specific mention is made of the importance of lessons in civics and character development.

I do not agree with these views because most of those people are not knowledgeable of the curriculum, especially in primary schools where teachers use a variety of integrated approaches daily in the classroom to change behaviours and help our young students to become better citizens by teaching topics such as values, health, family life, character and citizenship education.

Any teacher will tell you that through an integrated approach, topics such as values, morals, religion and similar issues are taught to our students. It is unfair to give the impression that such topics are not taught.

The school has a major role in producing a well rounded citizen, but let us not forget that our young people also look up to adults for examples and pattern their behaviours after the morals and values they see in adults around them.
