CCC crush Oxford in Universities T20 opener

REGIONAL Super 50 champions Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) made an emphatic start to the inaugural UWI World Universities T20 Cricket Tournament, with a resounding six-wicket win over Oxford Marylebone Cricket Club University at the Sir Frank Worrell Ground, St Augustine, yesterday.

Oxford, based in England. won the toss and elected to bat, mustering just 144 for four from their allotted 20 overs. CCC then coasted to their target in 16.5 overs.

Oxford started confidently with opener Christopher McBride dominating proceedings en route to 61 off 47. He slapped seven fours in his innings, although he found a steady partner hard to come by. Michail Powell removed Harry Adair for duck, before Yannick Ottley comprehensively bowled William Rogers for 13. This allowed captain/wicketkeeper James Seward to enter the pitch and together with McBride, the pair put on 77 for the third wicket. Seward made 44 but lost McBride to Powell caught by Johnnel Eugene, owing to poor shot selection. Seward scrambled singles and twos in the late overs to guide his team over the 140 mark, as he ended unbeaten off 42 balls with five fours to his credit.

In their turn at the crease, CCC's openers held nothing back with Kyle Corbin (53) and Kjorn Ottley (40) setting the tone with a blistering stand of 74. Corbin blasted five fours and three sixes off 40 balls, and Ottley proved a tad more aggressive with his knock coming off just 18 deliveries, containing six fours and two maximums. They raced to 50 from five overs, seemingly in a hurry to wrap up the victory. Ottley, however, was the first to depart, edging Louie Shaw behind to Seward, with Nicholas Sookdeosingh (1) then falling LBW to Dominic Clutterbuck three runs later to leave the score at 77 for two. From there, the innings slowed a bit as CCC took their foot off the gas.

Odin McCathy made a cool 17 before Shaw had him pulling into the waiting hands of Liam Burgess at square, and Clutterbuck then bowled Corbin to leave CCC at 117 for four. Panic never set in as Eugene entered with a wild cameo, smashing 25 off 13 (one four, two sixes) to see his side register their opening win with more than three overs to spare. Clutterbuck ended with figures of two for 24, while Shaw impressed with two for 28. Corbin, who is also the CCC skipper, took home the man-of-the-match honours for his innings. CCC will now face USA today at the same venue at 6.30 pm, with the opening match at 2 pm pitting Tertiary Sport Association of TT (TSATT) against Oxford. Admission is $25 at the gate.
