Siblings saved from burning La Brea home

THREE siblings escaped death when their La Brea home was destroyed by fire on Tuesday evening.

The children, four-year-old Jenay, Jaydon, six, and Jarell, 11, King, who had only moments before arrived at their Sobo Village home after school, were rescued from the burning house by a close relative.

All their belongings, including their schoolbooks and uniforms, were destroyed. A police report said the fire started at about 4 pm in their parents’ bedroom. The children were in their bedrooms changing out of their school uniforms when they smelt smoke. Their aunt, who was selling at a parlour in front of the house rushed inside and pulled the children out. The terrified children were taken to safety at another house. At the time of the fire, their parents Lydia Garvin-King and Gerad King were at work. Garvin-King said she was told her house was on fire and began screaming as she thought of her children.

Garvin-King, 33, said although nothing was saved, she was thankful her children were alive but said they did not have a place to call home.

“I don’t even know where to start. We have nowhere to go. I don’t know how my children will be going to school. All their books and uniform gone. My eldest son is writing SEA, and it hurts so much. All his past papers, books gone,”

Garvin-King said her children were still traumatised. “They could not sleep on Tuesday night. It is a scary experience what they went through. I am just praying that those in authority could step in and help us. Please, please help us we have nowhere to go.” Investigators said the cause of the fire was electrical. La Brea police are investigating. Anyone wishing to help the family can contact Garvin-King at 363-8260.
