Home-invasion suspects in custody

Two Morvant men in their early 20s are among three people arrested for a home invasion in St Augustine on Tuesday night.

Police said the latest suspect was arrested at his Morvant home at around 3 am today by members of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), and the St Joseph CID after intense investigations.

The man is wanted for a series of similar home invasions including the theft of $800,000 in Barrackpore last year.

The five men reportedly went to the Tunapuna home of some Cubans at around 9.35 pm on Tuesday. The men were armed and used two cars – a brown Chevrolet Colorado and a Volkswagen Jetta.

The Cuban residents heard a noise as the men entered the home. On checking they were attacked by the bandits and defended themselves.

The bandits left, stealing only a cellphone and a quantity of cash.

During the escape, one of the bandits dropped his gun which was later found by police.

At about 11 pm yesterday, officers stopped a pick-up truck matching the description of the Chevrolet Colorado near Massy Stores in Tunapuna, and arrested one of the men.

Newsday understands that another man was arrested near the Tunapuna Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Police said they believe the men are wanted for a string of other home invasions outside of the Northern Division, including one at the home of a Canadian diplomat, and 80-year-old Odette Aboud and Claudette Ramsingh who are the neighbours of Police Commissioner Gary Griffith.

St Joseph Police said the suspects are cooperating, and are confident the fifth suspect will be arrested.
