RURAL Development and Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein on Friday praised the Rural Development Company of TT (RDC) for the completion of drainage works in La Romaine, ahead of the opening of the new school term tomorrow. In a statement, Hosein said the works were one of the priority projects identified by San Fernando West MP, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi. These works on Dumfries Road, La Romaine will be finished on Sunday.

The project will ensure greater safety for pedestrians, a channel for the free flow of water from the roadway into a definite drainage which will reduce damage to the roadway and decrease street flooding. The works will also ensure the protection of nine nearby property boundaries. Hosein said he was pleased to see that RDC was on the ground assessing the works being conducted by the contractors.

“As a state agency, we need to ensure that we are getting value for money and that the standard of work being performed by contractors is up to par,” Hosein said. He also encouraged residents to communicate with their MPs, to let them know about issues affecting their community “so that the work can be done.” Palmiste/Hermitage councillor Roland Hall also praised the RDC for the quality and timeliness of its work. Hall said the project was much needed by the residents.

On Wednesday, Hosein urged local government chairmen to do what they can to prepare their respective jurisdictions for local government reform.

Local government reform legislation is expected to be brought to Parliament this month. Local government elections are constitutionally due later this year. Hosein presented members of the new RDC board of directors with their instruments of appointment on Wednesday.
