Siparia couple in court for drugs in BMW

A Siparia man found with drugs hidden in the trunk of his BMW on Christmas Eve was slapped with a $15,000 fine by a magistrate.

Ken Ragbir, 38, was jointly charged with his 25-year-old wife for possession of 425 grammes of marijuana. They appeared before senior magistrate Margaret Alert in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court.

Ragbir pleaded guilty to the charge, laid by PC Tuitt.

Reports said police were on patrol when the couple were spotted in the car parked on Villabrera Street in Siparia.

Upon seeing the police van, the driver began to reverse at speed. In trying to escape, he crashed into a car parked nearby which belonged to an off-duty policeman.

Police including Sgt Jaggernath, Cpl Ramlal chased them and the man and woman were detained. When police searched the car they found the drugs hidden in the trunk. The drugs were produced in court.

Ragbir was fined $15,000 or in default will serve seven months in prison. He was ordered to pay $2,000 forthwith.

The magistrate discontinued the charge against his wife.
