Abdulah: PNM, UNC won’t make a better society

DAVID ABDULAH, head of the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), asked the population to think what kind of society it really wants and which political party is dedicated to creating this, in his New Year’s Message.

He said usually the promises of various politicians fail to materialise, even as it is very easy for anyone to identify a list of the country’s problems that need to be set right, such as crime and violence, unemployment, high prices, inequality and discrimination.

“Your list may not be the same as ours, but we are sure that there are many similarities. However short or long your list is, however, there is one over-riding issue that confronts us – though most of us do not want to face it.

“That issue is – what kind of society do we wish to have? What do we want TT to look like? What TT do we we want our children and grandchildren to grow up in, what T&T do today’s young people want to live and prosper in?”

Abdulah said that while some will feel that for the 2019 local government elections and 2020 general election the key choice is which party to vote for, that is only half the issue.

“Already we are hearing of all kinds of chess games being played – with former political foes wanting to come together in ‘unity’ to fight the elections. But these actors haven’t answered the question: after the elections – what? For them it is only about getting back into office.”

However for the MSJ, elections are crucial as the country desperately needs the right people in government, to change TTinto a place of social justice, where the country’s resources benefit the many not only the few, and where we can all live a better life.

Abdulah alleged both the PNM and the UNC have propped up the status quo, to ensure the interests of the elite are protected while the interests of the many are neglected. “The TT that the PNM and UNC have created is corrupt; unjust; and where the elites have a huge share of the pie while the many have to make do with little or nothing.”

If we all want a corrupt society, we can vote for either PNM or UNC.

“If, however, we, as a people, want a different TT, a better society where all can have a better life and live in peace, then we cannot in conscience support either the PNM or the UNC."

Those who want a different TT, he said, "cannot but recognise that the MSJ is the only party that is committed to challenge and change the status quo.”

He said that decision time is coming.

“In 2019 we will find out what the people want. It can therefore be a year of tremendous opportunity – of hope for a better society; or a year of great danger where we choose to continue with the status quo, a status quo that will make our list of issues ten times as long, and the problems one hundred times more difficult to solve!

“Let’s choose wisely! Happy New Year!”
