$6,000 fine for weed, no DP, no insurance

BRANDON SOOKNANAN, 25, is counting his lucky stars that he was not jailed yesterday for possession of marijuana and driving without a licence and without insurance.

He pleaded guilty before senior magistrate Cherril-Ann Antoine in the San Fernando Magistrates' Court.

Sooknanan has eight previous convictions and yesterday, court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan, told Antoine that on Sunday at about 3 pm, police saw him driving on First Street, Harmony Hall, Gasparillo. When he saw the police jeep, the court heard, Sooknanan quickly turned into Second Street and they became suspicious.

Seedan told Antoine Sooknanan told police, "Boss, I was never issued a permit. I have a learner's, but it expired." When they requested the insurance for the vehicle, PBH 7459, he replied, "I doh know where that is, nah."

They searched him and found 30 grammes of marijuana.

Seedan produced a criminal record for Sooknanan which showed he had eight convictions since 2009, four of which are for robberies.

Antoine ordered Sooknanan to pay a total fine of $6,000 to cover all the charges or serve nine months in jail. He was granted two months to pay.
