THE TT Civil Aviation Authority says the evacuation of Piarco area control centre yesterday was due to routine maintenance of the fire-suppression system, and not because a fire broke out close to the building.

In a statement yesterday evening, the authority said at around 12.30 pm, FM200 gas was discharged by an external contractor carrying out the maintenance. As a result, the staff were evacuated.

The authority said contingency measures were put in place to ensure continued safe operation of aircraft in flight and for departures at airports within the Piarco flight information region.

“Measures were also taken to continue air-traffic services on the airbridge which ensured reduced delays of flights.”

The authority said the area control centre resumed full operations at 3 pm.
