Digicel Group CEO Alex Matuschka von Greiffenclau has died. The 47-year-old died suddenly on Thursday while holidaying with his family in his native Germany, group chairman Denis O'Brien said in a message to staff yesterday.

“No words can adequately express our sadness at Alex’s passing or our gratitude for having worked with him,” O’Brien, who is now the interim CEO, said in his note. “Digicel has lost a committed hard-working and exceptional chief executive. Those of us who have been fortunate to know him on a personal level have lost a dear friend.”

Matuschka joined Kingston-headquartered Digicel earlier this year. A Digicel TT spokeswoman declined to comment when Newsday contacted the company for comment.
