Barataria home damaged by fire

A 68-year-old Barataria retiree, his wife and daughter escaped serious injuries on Thursday night when fire broke out in a bedroom at their two-storey home.

Around 9 pm on Thursday Mohanlal Ramdath, his wife and daughter were upstairs at Eighth Street, Barataria when Ramdath’s daughter Natasha saw smoke coming from her bedroom. Natasha, 44, raised an alarm and told her father and mother to leave the house.

San Juan fire officers under officer Guerra were called and began extinguishing the fire, which had spread rapidly. They prevented it from destroying the entire upper floor. It was reportedly caused by an electrical problem.

Tenants who live on the lower floor suffered water damage.

The house is valued at $3 million.

Fire prevention officers were expected to return yesterday. Investigations are continuing.
