RBC is “proud” to donate a new flow cytometer to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex to help with the detection and early diagnosis of leukemia in children, Gretchen Camacho-Mohammed, the bank’s managing director for TT, told Newsday yesterday. “This vital piece of equipment can improve survival rates by catching the disease earlier and allowing patients to begin treatment as soon as possible,” she said.

In an e-mailed statement, Camacho-Mohammed said it was part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to the fight against childhood cancer, notably through its charity, the RBC Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund. The fund works closely with the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society to determine how donations can be put to use to help those who need it most, she said, and every year, the bank raises money through the annual RBC Race for the Kids 5K and 15K. This year’s race was held in October 2018. Funds from this years race went towards the purchase of the $2 million specialist machine.

The RBC Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund was established in 2008 to assist young people across the Caribbean who are 16 years and under and have been diagnosed with cancer. To date, through this fund, RBC has provided over $3 million to assist in the fight against cancer and has helped over 1,300 children across the Caribbean get assistance with their treatment requirements, the bank said.
