Kathy-Ann Fleming escaped what could have been a fiery death today when her Nissan X-Trail caught afire as she was driving past the lighthouse near South Quay, Port of Spain.

Around 9.13 am, members of the Wrightson Road fire station responded to reports that an SUV was on fire. Fleming, from Chaguanas, was not injured and managed to exit the car in time but remained traumatised after the incident.

A safety officer with the Public Transportation Services Corporation who ran out with a fire extinguisher was yanked away by fire officers as he tried to put out the blaze.

While investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze, they believe wires in the headlights may have overheated as the fire was near the headlights.

The front of the car was burnt, but Fleming was able to retrieve personal items, including her cell phone, clothing and insurance documents.
