Garbage collection resumes in P'Town

GARBAGE collection in Princes Town has resumed.

Rural Development and Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein says he is working with the Princes Town Regional Corporation to ensure that garbage is collected regularly in the that region.

There were reports last week of irregular garbage collection in Moruga Road, Tableland, Sixth Company, Lothian’s Junction, Ste Madeleine, Williamsville, Hardbargain, Garth Road, and New Grant, because garbage collectors went on strike.

Contractors with the corporation said they were not being paid.

The minister said one contractor, who was responsible for 11 areas in the Princes Town region, was expected to have been paid on Thursday.

He also said the San Fernando City Corporation has been helping out.

Hosein told contractors, “Garbage collection is an essential service and we need to take into consideration the public health issue that can result when refuse is left on the roadways or even in front of citizens’ homes for too long.

“We must all work together to ensure that the people are not affected due to delayed payments.”

The minister said the ministry will continue to work with the corporation.
