COUVA North MP Ramona Ramdial is predicting a bleak Christmas for hundreds of families who were affected by October catastrophic floods.

In a statement, Ramdial said families from Kelly Village, St Helena, Madras, San Juan, Sangre Grande are still awaiting their flood compensation cheques.

She said affected residents have received a run-around from the Ministry of Social Development.

“A myriad of excuses are being given such as they have no records, the verification process is still ongoing, delay because of fraud investigations and persons will be called when cheques are ready. This is unacceptable,” Ramdial said.

“Many of these flood victims have been unable to rebuild and recover to a satisfactory level. From reports coming to me, there are many families still without beds, furniture and kitchen appliances who are awaiting these cheques as they fall in the lower income bracket and are unable to purchase all that is necessary,” she said.

Ramdial appealed to the prime minister to instruct his ministers to fast-track the processing of flood compensation cheques for flood victims.
