PoS cops strike on criminals

Port of Spain division police have sent a warning to criminals promising to "strike" on them to protect the public.

Snr Supt Simboondath Rajkumar also assured the public the police were committed to reducing crime in and around the city of Port of Spain over the Christmas and Carnival seasons.

"We won't be tolerating criminal activities of any kind. We intend to strike at surprise and without warning in order to secure these drivers and late evening shoppers coming out of the city of Port of Spain," he said.

The senior officer spoke to Newsday while overseeing a police exercise in Success Village, Laventille on Friday night.

Supt Wayne Mohammed, who was also on the exercise, said the increased visibility of the police was intended to give citizens a greater sense of ease and comfort as they go about their business.

And their efforts have led to the arrest of a 23-year-old Beetham man for his role in a series of robberies in the Port of Spain district. Officers of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) Strike Team executed a warrant at the suspect's home at 14th Street, Beetham, at around 8 pm, on Friday.

The suspect has two outstanding warrants in the Port of Spain division. He was taken to the Besson Street Police Station pending further inquiries.

Also police found an undisclosed quantity of marijuana in Beetham as well as cocaine and drug paraphernalia in searches on Nelson Street, Port of Spain.
