Baby Terron dies days before his first Xmas

WITH his gift already wrapped under the tree, six-month-old Terron Baird would have experienced his first Christmas in the next few days at his Waterloo, Carapichaima home.

Sadly Baby Terron did not live to see this day. He was found dead in his bed by his nine-year-old brother Jeremiah. His grieving parents are now preparing to bury their youngest child.

On Wednesday at about 10.30 am Jewel Hamilton, 29, fed and burped her baby and then placed him asleep on the bed.

Terron's brother later found him stuck between the bed and a wall. He was not breathing.

Speaking to Newsday today, Hamilton said she is now living a nightmare. In tears, the mother said she had always been extremely careful with her children.

“I can’t believe this is happening. I was his protector .I feel as this is a bad dream. My baby!” she cried.

Hamilton said she had fed her son and put him to bed.

“I always make sure to put him to burp before I put him down. I secured the bed with pillows around him to prevent him from falling. Then I went to clean the house. I was so excited about him experiencing his first Christmas.

"I did not know I would return later to see my baby dead.”

Hamilton said her other son was also home, helping her clean.

“While cleaning I kept on running into the bedroom to check on Terron. When I checked on him those times, he was okay and I went back to cleaning,”

A short while she was painting and asked Jerimiah to check on his baby brother.

“Jeremiah shouted, ‘Mummy, I think something is wrong with Terron, he is not breathing.’

She rushed to where Jeremiah was holding his little brother.

“I took my baby in my arms. He was not breathing,” she said, in tears. “He was going to see his first Christmas this year. We all so excited. His gift is already wrapped under the tree. God, no, no. My baby.”

She told Newsday she and her husband were "so excited and were counting down the days." Now, she said, the family would not be able to celebrate Christmas, as they would be making funeral arrangements.

The baby was taken to the Couva Health Facility. Investigators said there were no marks of violence on Terron, who was wearing a diaper and vest.

An autopsy done on Friday found Terron's death was caused by positional asphyxia and his death has been ruled as accident. Funeral arrangements are being made to bury the baby.
