MANY workers in the capital could not enjoy lunch on the Friday before the Christmas break, as food outlets were left without a water supply by a blow-out to a water main on Wednesday that gutted the supply to the East West Corridor.

But WASA said today that repairs had been completed and supplies would trickle back over the next 48 hours.

A WASA statement said the blown air valve on the Caroni North Transmission Main, Piarco was fixed at 9.30 am, to the benefit of customers served by the Caroni Water Treatment Plant.

“The transmission system is being re-commissioned to provide pipe-borne water supply to affected areas. However customers are advised it may take between 24 to 48 hours for the service to normalize to some areas.”

WASA said customers may experience some discolouration in their water as the service is restored.

It said, “The authority will be engaging in system flushing exercises, in order to minimize such occurrences. However customers experiencing such a supply should allow their water to run until it clears.”

Help can be sought at WASA's Call Centre, toll-free at 800-4420/4426.

WASA’s communications manager Daniel Plenty confirmed to Newsday, “We have completed repairs. The supply is back on now and is being restored.”

However Plenty could not put a time on when each individual area would have its supply restored. He said this would depend on the time taken to re-pressurise the system, and on a given region’s normal pattern of supply.

“Some areas get a scheduled supply so won’t get it back immediately. Those areas with a constant supply will be the first to get it back.”

The affected areas ranged from St Augustine to Belmont (including Port of Spain) and from Piarco Airport to Santa Cruz.
