Prisons Commissioner Gerard Wilson yesterday assured relatives of prisoners at the nations’ prisons that they will be fed sumptuous Christmas lunch and also promised a hearty breakfast of hops and ham, and for those who do not partake of pork they will be given meals to suit their palate.

According to Wilson every year the prison service tries to make prisoners comfortable by providing meals close to the ones they would have enjoyed while in the free world.

However he said that while the meals may not be comparable to what people enjoy at their homes with friends and relatives the service ensures that every effort is made to provide decent meals to celebrate the birth of Christ.

He said the prisons’ canteens began selling fruit cake as well as apples, grapes and bananas and if relatives of prisoners wish to purchase those items for their inmates they can do so.

He also revealed that sorrel juice and ginger beer are also sold at the prisons canteen so relatives can also purchase those items for the prisoners.

Wilson said the prison service ensures that people who do not eat pork or beef alternative arrangements are made with respect to how the food is prepared and served.

“We do not serve pork to Muslims, or beef to Hindus, we ensure that everyone’s religious beliefs are respected and some alternative arrangements made to ensure all are fed with appropriate meals.”

On Christmas Day Wilson will spend some “quality time” with his officers by visiting them at the various prisons and at the same time he will also take time out to meet with prisoners to personally wish them Christmas greetings.
