Grieving mom has dialysis at hospital

IN tears, grieving mother of three Arlene Frontin underwent dialysis at the San Fernando General Hospital yesterday.

Frontin is in a lot of pain owing to complications caused by her failing kidneys, and relatives fear her health may take a turn for the worse.

They told Newsday Frontin has not slept or stopped crying since her son Stephon was killed on Sunday night.

“Even as she was leaving home this morning to go to the hospital, she was crying. She keeps saying she didn’t know it was the last time she was going to see Stephon. She is not doing well at all. She tells us she is trying to be strong, but it is hard for her. Stephon was her only son,” a relative said.

On Sunday night Stephon, 22 visited his mother in hospital, moments before he was shot and killed at a bar in Penal. When he left his mother’s bedside that night, he hugged and kissed her goodbye.

When Frontin learnt of her son’s death she asked doctors to discharge her temporarily to mourn her son at the family’s Penal Rock Road home. Doctors agreed.

Yesterday she returned to the hospital for dialysi, but relatives said she is expected to return to the ward at a later date.

Medical sources said even though they granted her request they have asked relatives to keep a close eye on her and if they see any signs of any problems Frontin must return to the hospital immediately.

At about 10 pm, on Sunday night, Stephon was at the bar liming with friends when he and another customer argued. The man is said to have left the bar and returned shortly with a gun and shot him in the back of the head.

Three weeks ago Frontin had to be intubated for a day and doctors feared the worst, but the next day she woke up. Frontin believed she had been given a second chance at life to spend with her children.

“ I didn’t know that Sunday night would be my last with Stephon. But instead of me going, it was he who is gone,” she told Newsday, in tears.

No arrest has been made. Police are questioning several people who were at the bar at the time of the shooting.
