HEALTH Minister Terrence Deyalsingh yesterday hosted his Fourth Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon for elderly constituents, at the WASA Sports Club in his constituency of St Joseph. About 200 senior citizens were given a Christmas meal and drinks, all to the backdrop of the Pal Joey Lewis Band. Deyalsingh sported a Santa Claus mask to welcome guests, later switching to a cowboy hat, and waltzed with a few constituents.

“You the senior citizens reflect what is good and holy about St Joseph and Trinidad and Tobago,” he said, addressing guests.

“You are the ones who helped build this society, people like Ms Taitt, as retired nurse. You are the ones on whose shoulders people like me stand on. You have given me a rock to stand on.

“I’ll do all to continue to serve you in the name and image of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

A couple told Newsday their views on the luncheon.

Bonny Barrow said, “I think it’s a grand idea, to bring the senior citizens in the community together for brunch. At this point in time it’s very lonely for seniors, so when they bring them out to interact with their neighbours, I think it’s so phenomenal. I hope he’s having it next year.”

She said the event was welcomed because at this time of year, many elderly people feel left out as their adult children are busy with their own preparations for Christmas. “Senior citizens feel neglected.” Her husband John Barrow agreed. “This event gives senior citizens hope, something around Christmas time they can look forward to. It’s a really good gesture.” Nurse Taitt, 89, told Newsday how nice it was the minister called out her name. “I’ll be 90 in February. I feel happy to be recognised by the minister for my service.” She was enjoying the function.
