Youngsters clash in RBC junior tennis tournament

MORE than a hundred young tennis players clashed yesterday at the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval during the RBC Junior Tennis Tournament.

The youths took part in a round-robin tournament in several categories – the boys under 10 singles, Boys under 14 singles, girls under 14 singles, girls under 12 singles, and the under 10 novice singles.

Close to 60 matches took place at the country club where the children faced off to gain points to advance to the next round.

Yeshowah Smith got points after beating Benjamin Harragin (6-3) in the first group of matches in the under 10 singles boys. In the under 12 girls singles, Haleigh Fabres beat Jada Des Vignes in two straight sets (4-2, 4-2). The Under 14 category saw more action as Andre Augustine was taken down by Christopher Roberts in straight sets (4-2, 4-0), in the boys' category, and the girls category Jordane Dookie came out on top over Gabby Mackenzie whom she beat in three sets (4-1, 1-4, 10-7). In the under 10 novice category, Omar Thomas beat Nicholas Abraham (6-3)

Officials said the round-robin segment would be completed today, after which, the points the children gained would be tallied to determine who would advance.

More tennis action will be taking place today at the Country Club.
