A charitable organisation in Canada, under the management of a group of Trinidadians, sent a container of flood-relief items for people affected by the late October flooding in Greenvale Park, Caroni, Warrenville and other neighbouring villages. The initiative, called We Are One, is led by broadcast journalist Vashtie Durga.

Durga said yesterday that when she heard about the flooding she decided to involve the charitable organisation and people came forward to provide cleaning items, clothing, blankets, linen, food and pharmaceutical products. The response was overwhelming, she said, and she also sought the assistance of a businessman who provided a container for the barrels to be shipped to Trinidad.

Yesterday, over 125 charitable organisations, including churches, mosques and temples, collected barrels for distribution.

Councillor Samuel Sankar, who represents Kelly Village and Warrenville, said he collected three. He said some people who were badly affected continue to wait and hope that their relief cheques are processed before Christmas.
