THE EDITOR: It was the early evening of Old Year’s Night in 1995 when the brother of a newly minted government minister ascended the stairs of a Maraval home for the New Year’s celebration taking place there.

As he made himself comfortable, another guest pointed out to this individual that he had left his vehicle engine running.

“No,” he replied, “that is my government appointed driver for the evening.”

Now, if Mr Minister’s brother thought the rest of us would be impressed to know that our tax dollars were funding his Old Year’s Night driver, he was very wrong, but much more importantly was the mentality that thought this was the right thing to do.

Of course, this same government went on to invoice a new airport for $1.6 billion that really cost only $600 million, among countless other projects involving massive amounts of misappropriated funds.

This first experience in government, however, only whetted its appetite for the real plunder which was to take place between 2010-2015.

So this brings us to today, where two government ministers think it is their prerogative to exit the arrivals section of the same corruptly built airport via the one-way entry access.

Once again we have this warped thinking at play that we rulers are never subject to the same rules we make for the ruled class to follow.

For heaven’s sake, when are we ever going to find leaders who fully understand that one of the primary facets of positive leadership is setting a good example for others to follow?
