Man stole tomatoes, killed in Paramin

A 25-year-old man who was beaten and shot three times on Saturday night was reportedly murdered for stealing bags of ripened tomatoes from farmers at Cacao Trace, Paramin.

Jhovaan Simon was nicknamed “tomato thief” by Paramin residents months before his death.

Simon, who began living with his girlfriend in Paramin, reportedly stole tomatoes from nearby stalls and vegetable gardens in the area.

In late October, a Paramin woman identified only as Marlene, secured several bags of tomatoes she had for sale, and when she returned to her stall they were gone.

A report was made to Maraval police.

Farmers in the area also complained of their crops being stolen.

Simon reportedly stole the tomatoes and resold them to vendors at Charlotte Street and the Port of Spain market.
