Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says he has being threatened after his cell number was shared on social media by former UNC minister Devant Maharaj.

UPDATE:

A woman who sent a threatening and abusive WhatsApp message to the Prime Minister on Saturday, hours after his cell number was made public, is expected to be questioned by Special Branch officers.

Sources said Dr Rowley told Special Branch officers and this prompted an immediate investigation. Police were able to identify the caller as a woman whose relatives claim she is is mentally unstable.

However, investigators from Special Branch are yet to determine if this is correct.
Yesterday Police Commissioner Gary Griffith said, “The police know who the individual is. She may be a mentally unstable woman. But Special Branch officers are carrying out a detailed probe.” Griffith said he did not wish to divulge any further information, but all threats are taken seriously.

Asked by Newsday if the prime minister had made a report at a police station, he said the matter was in the hands of Special Branch.

Newsday was able to verify that there was no official report to any police station and the matter is being handled solely by Special Branch.

On Saturday Rowley said he had been the subject of “abuse and threatening behaviour” because of United National Congress (UNC) activist Devant Maharaj circulating his personal contact information to citizens on a social networking site. He said so grave were the threats, they warranted the involvement of Griffith.

Rowley said after Maharaj’s actions, he had to stop using that cell number.

“As a result of this act of gross misconduct and in my desire to serve you in a sane and sober manner I regret that I will be discontinuing the use of the number that you might have known and used at some time in the past,” he said in a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister”.
