The two prison officers charged with smuggling contraband into the Maximum Security Prison last week Thursday pleaded not guilty when they appeared yesterday before Arima magistrate Gillian Liverpool-Scotland.
Kendall James and Anderson Seeraj appeared in the Arima First Magistrates' Court. They were allegedly found with several packs of Broadway cigarettes, a lighter, and a Samsung phone, items which are not allowed in the prison.
Seeraj, an officer with 21 years' service, from Ste Madeleine, and the father of three, was granted $40,000 bail with surety or a cash alternative by cheque of $10,000. He is to report to the Ste Madeleine Police Station every Saturday.
James, from Malabar, Arima, with 22 years' service, also the father of three, was granted $12,500 bail and will have to report to the Malabar Police Station every Saturday.
The men were represented by attorney Darren Mitchell, who argued that the men did not have marijuana, but were smokers themselves.
They are to reappear on January 7 in the Arima Third Court.
