PORT of Spain CID officers spent several hours yesterday interviewing a 10-year-old schoolboy, who called the E999 Command Centre and threatened to cut off the head of Police Commissioner Gary Griffith.

The call was made to the command centre around 8.50 am by the caller who said, “I want to cut off the head of Commissioner Griffith.” The boy then ended the call.

The officers of the Port of Spain CID were alerted and they teamed up with the Cyber Crime Unit in an effort to trace the call. Officers went to Colonial Road, Barrrackpore and interviewed the schoolboy, as well his 31-year-old mother.

The woman told police her son suffers from a mental disorder and pleaded with the officers to spare her son from any prosecution.

Statements were obtained and a cellphone was seized. The senior officers said yesterday that because of the boy’s condition they may not lay any charge against him for misuse of the phone. Senior officers said they are observing a trend where people, some of them mentally disturbed, have made threatening phone calls against the commissioner in recent weeks. Two people, from San Fernando and El Socorro, who were charged with misuse of the telephone after making threatening phone calls were sent to St Ann’s Hospital for observation and for medical reports to be obtained. A 12-year-old Port of Spain schoolboy, who admitted to making threatening phone calls to the commissioner, pleaded guilty to the offence and is due for sentencing on January 16, next year.
