COMMISSIONER of Police (CoP) Gary Griffith today said there is no criminal investigation into former minister Devant Maharaj circulating the Prime Minister's personal contact information on social media.

But Griffith warned citizens against making this kind of information public because it could jeopardise people's security. On Saturday, Dr Rowley said Maharaj's decision on Friday to release his personal cell phone number has made him "the subject of abuse and threatening behaviour."

Griffith said citizens need to be very careful when releasing this kind of information without the consent of the individual.

The CoP confirmed that subsequent to the PM's cell phone number being publicised on social media, Rowley received threatening phone calls from one person. He said this matter is now the subject of a police investigation. Griffith assured this investigation will be thoroughly done.

In a statement on Saturday, National Security Minister Stuart Young described Maharaj's action as "irresponsible, deplorable and destructive." Young said, "It is plainly wrong and even dangerous to circulate, publicly, the private information of any citizen, and that includes, public officers." He urged all civic-minded citizens to reject and condemn Maharaj's actions.

Young also said Maharaj last Friday was circulating calls for protest action in a way which is worthy of criminal investigation and "may qualify as the serious crime of sedition."
