A FORMER employee of the Children’s Life Fund has been charged with 13 counts of larceny of the property of the fund.

The police in a release said Krisas Sookraj, 43, of School Street, Carenage, was charged with 13 counts of fraud against the Children’s Life Fund amounting to US$15,640. The incidents are alleged to have happened during the month of July 2015, while she worked as an executive assistant at the Children’s Life Fund.

The sums of money were approved by the board of the Children’s Life Fund to be issued as payment to 13 children between the ages of three to six years, who were suffering with life-threatening illnesses. An investigation was launched into the misappropriation of state funds by Snr Supt Tooteram Dookhie and a team of officers from the Fraud Squad. Police say after analysing the evidence, instructions were given by the DPP to initiate prosecution against Sookraj.

She was arrested at her home on Wednesday and charges were later laid by Sgt Damian Thomas of the Fraud Squad on Friday. She was expected to appear before the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The Children's Life Fund is a charitable fund established by government in 2010 to provide funding for children with life-threatening conditions.
