TT boxers get Govt assistance

THE NATIONAL boxing team will feature in the 2018 Caribbean Championships, which began yesterday in Georgetown, Guyana.

The TT team, through their governing body TT Boxing Association (TTBA), were recently given assistance from the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, as well as the Sport Company of TT, to ensure that they were able to compete at the event.

The squad, along with their coaches, former national boxing champs Floyd Trumpet and Ria Ramnarine, left Wednesday for Guyana and promised to better their performance in 2017 when they collected 10 medals.

According to a media release, TTBA president Cecil Forde expressed his gratitude to Sport Minister Shamfa Cudjoe for her role in guaranteeing that the team were able to feature in Guyana.

"You will not regret the investment made with our boxers," said Forde. "They will deliver. We have some of the best boxers in the Caribbean and to withdraw from the championships would have affected the entire event. More so, our athletes certainly need to compete to continue their development.

"2019 is a big year ahead and this is an important step for the boxers. Particularly the elite boxers and the youth boxers who will be stepping up next year.”
