Woman in hijab fires at police

A YOUNG woman wearing a hijab and two male accomplices who led police on a high-speed chase from Penal to San Fernando after robbing a bar owner have been arrested.

Police reports said the woman and men were occupants of a Ford Ranger that sped on the highway. As the van moved, the woman fired at police. Senior police who commended the team from the Penal CID for their quick response said that luckily, none of the police were injured during the shootout.

According to a police report, at about 10 pm on Tuesday, the woman and two other men entered Robin’s Bar in San Francique and announced a hold-up. They robbed the owner of an undisclosed sum on money and packets of cigarettes before driving off. A report was made to the Penal CID and police including Sgt Gookool, PC Khaleel and others immediately responded.

Highway patrol police were also notified and several road blocks were set up along the highway. Police spotted the van proceeding along Gopie Trace and called out to the occupants to stop. The woman leaned out of the van and began shooting at the police who returned fire.

The chase continued onto the Solomon Hochoy Highway near Tarouba. Reports said the bandits drove off the highway and into the bushes. The van later came to stop down an incline. The woman was arrested while her two accomplices ran off further into a swampy area.

The 24-year-old woman was arrested and taken to the police station. A firearm was found in the van. Hours later, police arrested the male accomplices. The three are expected to go on identification parade in connection with a series of robberies.
