Murder rate alarming, Mr Minister

THE EDITOR: On a recent Morning Edition programme with host Fazeer Mohammed, one of his guests was Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs Fitzgerald Hinds.

Asked about the extremely high crime rate, his response, in part, was that there is murder all over the world.

The problem with that old argument is that TT has a very small population compared with many other countries. For example, New York City has an estimated ten million population and its murder rate for 2017 was 290. Our murder rate for 2017 was 494 and as of November 8 it stood at 451 for this year, with a population of just over 1.3 million.

This is an alarming statistic and cause for serious concern.
