DNA profiling,fingerprinting for cops also

THE EDITOR: I respond to the article in the Newsday regarding 25 police officers who have been transferred by Commissioner of Police (CoP) Gary Griffith.

The CoP appears serious about weeding out rogue officers from the service. His actions have given the population a sigh of relief but the job of separating the good from the bad or ugly will need a lot more effort.

Perhaps since the CoP will succeed where his predecessors couldn’t over the past two decades in purging the police of bad officers and holding them accountable for their actions.

I believe all officers must be subjected to scrutiny to ascertain whether they have participated in criminal activities. And not only polygraphs are essential but also DNA profiling and fingerprinting should be conducted across the board.

In addition, serious thought should be given to forfeiting retirement benefits, if deemed appropriate, for those involved directly or indirectly in murders.

However, we must understand that not all officers are bad and those who have walked the straight and narrow should be commended for putting their lives in harm’s way to protect and serve us.

Lastly, I commend Griffith for attempting to sanitise, reform and rebuild a new police organisation in order to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
