Two nights of wake are being held for Winston “Shadow” Bailey. Shadow, often regarded as one of calypso’s prolific musicians, died Tuesday at 3.50 am at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope Hospital.

Tamico Moore, Shadow’s daughter-in-law, told Newsday the funeral arrangements are still being finalised. She said, however, that the wake will be held at his Mt Hope home. Belgroves Funeral Home, she said, will co-ordinate the funeral.

Reactions gushed in when news of his death spread. The Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts, artist LeRoy Clarke among the wider national community paid tribute to Shadow.

Yesterday Newsday received more tributes.

Sparrow, Slinger Francisco: “I always have fond memories of Shadow. I remember from the very beginning, he in his early days, he and I got together, with Lord Kitchener of course and we had the three-way connection in the Sparrow Hideaway.

“And he was very well appreciated and he went down very well. And the people loved him very much. Some people who did not know about him, and thought that he was going to be a liability to somebody, after the show came to me and said ‘This guy is good’

“And I told them ‘This is what I was trying to tell you all of the time.’

Calypso Rose, Linda McArtha Monica Sandy-Lewis: “The Mighty Shadow and myself are like family. My sister is married to Shadow’s brother, who also passed away two years ago, so my three nieces are also Shadow’s nieces.

“Shadow was a guy who would be writing songs and giving it out to other artistes. He used to be one of our background chorus group and I told him one day, ‘Why are you giving away your songs. Go to the beach by the sea in the morning, before the sun rise and let go your voice to the ocean and you are going to see a change.

“And that is what Shadow did. Shadow was a master of his creativity. We both received an award in Tobago (Tobago medal of Honour, gold in 2016).”
