26 police dogs rescued from Caroni Police Station

Twenty-six K-9 dogs and their five handlers were rescued from flood waters which rose to as high as eight feet at the Caroni Police station last Saturday following more than 10 hours of rainfall last Friday.

The dogs were placed in boxes and inside Defence Force trucks which took some of them to Cumuto and others to Chaguaramas where they were still being housed up until yesterday.

According to reports the flood waters began rising steadily on Saturday afternoon and when handlers observed that the flood waters had reached the area of the dog kennels and the dogs could have drowned, they contacted President of the Police Social and Welfare Association Insp Michael Seales about their predicament and Seales contacted Police Commissioner Gary Griffith who sought the assistance of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation and the Defence Force.

While the rescue of the dogs was taking place some soldiers went inside the charge room of the station where they removed arms and ammunition from the station.

Five officers who were on duty were led to a corporation truck where they were taken to safer ground, and the doors of the station locked.

Officers who work at the Caroni Police station said they will be approaching the Association to have the station relocated to higher ground.
